…working on a big new orchestra piece which will be premiered next season - I really enjoy dwelling in the long form and finding connections and trajectories through the large musical forces… * more soon * #newmusic #writingmusic

It was so special to be with @cellistjohannesmoser and the @helsinkiphilharmonic for the Finnish premiere of Before we fall earlier this month - Johannes embodies the music so magnificently and the orchestra was incredible under the baton of their maestro @jpsaraste . The performance is available to stream on video - really recommend watching Johannes performing the piece! 🎧 link in bio “With every new work by Anna Thorvaldsdottir that I hear, I become more and more convinced that she is one of the most important compositional voices of our time … [e]ach new work is an adventure.” – Hufvudstadsbladet “Before we fall is fundamentally a deeply elegiac work … the congenially crafted solo part, which successfully explores the instrument’s resources across its entire emotional and sonic range, was interpreted with all conceivable finesse, insight, and precision by Johannes Moser – the commissioner of the work, who at times seemed to embody his part rather than merely interpret it. – Hufvudstadsbladet “Thorvaldsdottir is considered one of the most original orchestral composers of our time. Following the soloist’s journey through the dark-hued, rumbling, and growling orchestral lava flow of the cello concerto Before We Fall, anyone in the audience could hear why.” – Helsingin Sanomat

Thanks for 2025 dearest friends - wishing you and yours the very best for a bright and meaningful new year 🎆
Happy Holidays dearest friends 🎄🫶
cozy studio time - working on a new symphony 🎶 I treasure the space and openness that comes with finding new music, the freedom and organic flow of ideas As this new large orchestra piece is essentially a ‘symphony’ I have been asking myself what a new symphony is today - I think that question has many interesting answers and a lot of more questions that orbit as well… What do you think? #newmusic #musicmaking
Lovely to see UBIQUE on Tom Huizenga’s NPR top 10 list of albums this year

This was such special project to release together in February with @sonolummusic and the gorgeous performance of @clairechaseflute , Cory Smythe, @tinkatonk and @sethpa
Lovely to see UBIQUE on Tom Huizenga’s NPR top 10 list of albums this year This was such special project to release together in February with @sonolummusic and the gorgeous performance of @clairechaseflute , Cory Smythe, @tinkatonk and @sethparkerwoods 🩶 UBIQUE is in a large part inspired by the notion of being everywhere at the same time, an enveloping omnipresence, while simultaneously focusing on details within the density of each particle, echoed in various forms throughout the piece. At the core lives the idea of connection, of coming together and being as one. This manifests on various scales throughout the piece as sounds are both reduced to their smallest particles and their atmospheric presence expanded towards the infinite. The performers breathing together as one, carrying the calmness that lives at the centre, with an external madness that the piece never really reveals, but here and there gives a glimpse of, a world that it does not want to be a part of. Sound and mixing: @dbssound Executive Producers: Helen Meyer and John Meyer Session engineer: @rick.jacobsohn with @jensenartists , @densityarts * UBIQUE was commissioned by Carnegie Hall, the Cheswatyr Foundation, Kurt Chauviere, and Density Arts as part of Claire Chase’s Density 2036 project

AERIALITY at the Kennedy Center in March

January 14, 2013

Aeriality (2011) will receive its US premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on March 4th, performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ilan Volkov. Also on the program is a new piece (2013) by Icelandic composer, and a friend, Hlynur A. Vilmarsson, which will receive its US premiere as well. Hlynur’s music tends to have rhythmic qualities and he has e.g. worked with computer animated graphic scores as well as with more "traditionally" notated scores – it will be exciting to hear the new piece!

The concert is a part of the Nordic Cool Festival and will also feature pieces by Grieg and Sibelius – it starts at 7:30PM. See here for more information about the concert.

The ISO will be performing the same program in Reykjavik, Iceland, on February 26th, at 7:30PM, in Harpa Concert- and Conference Center. See here for more information about the concert in Reykjavik.

The day after the orchestra concert in Washington, on March 5th at 6:00PM, the Iceland based Duo Harpverk will be premiering Tactility (2012), for percussion and harp, and a selection of other new pieces, on their concert at same festival. See here for more info about their concert.

I am very much looking forward to going to Washington for these concerts! And then I’ll be on my way to NYC for a workshop with ICE – but more on that later :)
